Fire Emblem, awaken

If you’re a Fire Emblem fan (like me) you should have heard by now that there’s a new Fire Emblem game coming out! It was released last April in Japan and is only now coming to North America, so it is indeed new to us. This game is called Fire Emblem: Awakening. Here is the plot summarized:

“The story focuses on the trials of Chrom, the prince of the Halidom of Ylisse, and his companions during a turbulent era. When the neighbouring nation of Plegia starts acting suspiciously, Chrom commands his band of soldiers–the Shepherds–to keep his country at peace. Soon, he encounters an unholy force plaguing the lands and a masked swordsman claiming to be Marth, the Hero-King of legend.”

There is a demo out on the 3DS for everyone to download. It’s a large file but worth it if you want to check out the game before buying. In this game, you can customize your character, choose their gender, and name them. The character models are all 3D (not to be confused with the 3D functions of the 3DS) and the game features fully voiced cut-scenes. Your character even talks sometimes!

The demo offers 2 chapters to play and – although it isn’t a long demo – you get to see what duel-fighting is like and also learn a few things about the plot. You even get to see Marth, the old hero. Backtracking a little … yes, there is duel-fighting! Characters get to team up to fight or support one another in battle. Sounds very cool, no? You can also build up support by having characters fight side-by-side, like in the old games.

The areas I saw in the demo were beautiful, making me ask more than once, “Am I really playing Fire Emblem right now?” It was much different than the DS games I was used to. You really get to see the world you are in in this game, unlike the previous gameboy games where your character would disappear into a castle or fort on the world map and only a still picture of grass or mountains would be placed behind them.

The game comes out February 4th, and if you pre-order you also get an art book as a bonus. Hopefully the story in this game won’t disappoint. I’m hoping for a Sacred Stones level of greatness (my favourite game in the series so far).

If you have a 3DS and you love Fire Emblem, get the demo. You’ll have fun, I promise!
